Are You Pining For A Punk?

Are you pining for a punk? If your life ever read like something printed in a gossip rag, maybe you are. I spent some time laid up with an illness recently, and a friend dropped off a stack of those scandal magazines to keep me company. Famous or not to me, the people in them shared one storyline over and over: sudden splits and sudden couplings. These are folks with everything money can buy. You'd think their love lives would fall into place.

The way they handle each other, though, is something else. Early infatuation seems to blur their vision completely. Flaws get smoothed over, couples pair off within days, and nobody bothers to learn who the other person actually is, warts included. They have the time and resources to throw themselves in deep, fast, so caution stops mattering. Then it all collapses, reality shows up, and suddenly there's shock and open mourning over a thing that was never built to last.

Love wasn't meant to spin around like a revolving door. Dip a toe in first and decide whether you want the rest. In that crowd it's far too simple to walk out and grab the next person who's lining up for the role of the new big love. Swapping partners like that is treated as proof the latest pick is a catch rather than a dud. Being picky doesn't make you a loser. Keep at it and one day you may land a keeper and dodge the dead-end tangles entirely.

Fame and money pull hard. But a person with one enormous talent sometimes has little else going for them, and blending that kind of dazzling existence with ordinary daily life is tough. Whatever drew them to you can fade, and you end up stranded. In that world cheating spreads freely and is treated as part of the deal, STDs and all.

The whole thing becomes a contest, a round of one-upmanship with no safety underneath it. When a real crisis lands, the person hurting usually gets abandoned. So what do you actually want: a glittering red-carpet gown you have to be stitched into for one night, or a comfortable, good-looking outfit you can pull on again and again? Relationships run the same way. If he isn't to your liking and you aren't to his, that doesn't brand either of you a failure. You both just stepped around a sizable mistake.
