Don't Look to Tomorrow or Back to Yesterday for Answers

Answers don't live in tomorrow, and they're not buried in yesterday either. What you have is this moment. Today can't reach forward and rearrange the future, and it can't reach back to edit what already happened. Yet people pour themselves into both: regret over what's done, worry over what hasn't arrived.

Think about how strange that trade is. You're already here, in the present, and you spend it somewhere you can't actually be. Replaying yesterday won't move a single thing that occurred. And as the old line about the best-laid plans of mice and men reminds us, what you map out for tomorrow may never arrive the way you drew it up.

So the thing to settle on is the now. Not the how, not the why. When your attention drifts off to either direction, you miss what's directly in front of you: the thing you're supposedly looking at, the voice you're supposedly listening to. I've watched the light flicker on and then dim in my grandson's eyes. I've noticed a friend carrying more weight than their words let on, only because I chose not to look past the quiet distress in their face.

Pay attention right now. Stop asking how to do it. Just do it.

What slips by you while you're half-elsewhere? It isn't yesterday any longer, and tomorrow hasn't shown up.
