Fantasy And Reality Are Not That Far Apart

Think about how close fantasy sits to reality. In your heart you already sense they're cut from the same cloth. Fantasy is simply how you wish things were, and reality is how things actually stand at this moment. The two overlap more than we tend to admit.

And fantasy has a way of crossing over. Count how many inventions, plans, and achievements were rehearsed in someone's imagination long before they existed in the world. Leonardo da Vinci sketched machines that nobody could build in his lifetime, yet some of those ideas eventually arrived. His fantasies turned real, just centuries after he put them on paper.

What unsettles me is that harmful things grow through the same process. People who commit terrible acts, sexual offenders and terrorists among them, frequently begin by picturing what they want to do and then imagining it unfolding. That raises an uncomfortable question about pornography, violent video games, and horror films, and whether they feed something that was better left unfed in certain people.

The pattern usually starts small, with acts that seem harmless enough. Over time the thrill wears thin. When the payoff shrinks or the excitement fades, the behavior escalates. Each step demands something bolder and more damaging than the last. A fantasy that once stayed in the head moves one notch closer to action, and then the person carries it out for real: assault, murder, an attack.
