Success and Fear

Can success and fear travel together? It sounds like a contradiction, having both at once, yet they feed each other more often than people admit.

Think about what happens the moment you pull something off. Now there's a version of you that performed, and people quietly assume you'll keep performing at that level. Do one thing well and the assumption spreads: surely you can be good at the next thing too, and the thing after that.

A single win rarely gets to stay a single win. Repeat it once, then twice, then on demand, over and over. The pressure isn't only about the work either. You're expected to look the part, live the part, carry yourself like someone who has arrived. And presumably you're supposed to be happy about all of it.

Then there's everyone else. Rise high enough and someone decides to measure themselves against you. More rivals show up, the bar keeps climbing, and staying on top gets harder precisely because you got there in the first place.

The sharpest part comes last. Succeed, build all those expectations on top of yourself, and then stumble. That fall can sting far worse than if you'd never reached the height at all.
