You Can't Give Away Kindness

Try it sometime. Hand kindness to a stranger and watch what happens: it refuses to leave you. You meant to let it go, and instead it loops back around and lands in your own lap.

A small favor, an unhurried word, the choice to be patient with someone who does not deserve your patience. You put it out into the world expecting nothing. What returns is rarely the same currency you spent. Someone smiles at you two days later for no reason you can trace. You feel lighter for an afternoon. The thing you gave away has quietly multiplied and come home.

That is the odd arithmetic of it. Most things shrink when you divide them. Money spent is money gone. Give kindness, though, and you end up holding more than you started with, as if the giving itself were the trick that grows it.

So the old line holds up. You cannot give kindness away. Go ahead and try.
