Just Plain Nasty

Two steps forward, one step back. You know the kind of day I mean: the one where being nice or upbeat is simply beyond you. Maybe you want to swear a little, put your foot through the drywall, or let the next telemarketer have it. Darker thoughts about yourself or someone else drift in uninvited. And even on the days you manage to hold it together while awake, those ugly feelings wait for you and show up in your sleep.

Nobody is perfect, and chasing that is its own trap. The effort usually breeds the very frustration you were trying to bury, and it leaks out sideways anyway. These are the days that test a person. Even the saints had them, and not always just for an afternoon; sometimes the bad stretch runs for weeks or months or longer. You are a human being. If you can find a way to forgive other people, you can extend that same forgiveness to yourself.

Our worst stumbles tend to be where the real lessons live. They remind us how human we are, and they point, fairly bluntly, to the places where we still fall short. Give yourself the grace you would hand to a friend. Those slips also work like a survey: they show where you missed the mark, and where you could stand to learn more about the situations that keep tripping you up and where to hold your own standards steady.

Letting some of it out does something for you. There is a cleanness that comes afterward. Think about a time you cried until there was nothing left and felt oddly calm once it passed. Getting the anger out, even briefly, before you go back to holding it in, can feel like a small mercy. A lot of the pressure comes from feeling like we have no room to say what we actually feel. The speeding ticket where you have to nod and take it. The job where the customer is always right no matter what. Hang loose. You will get there.
